GM notes 12-10-00:

Q&A

1. Why is there so much "in-game" stuff on the website? Do I have to read this? Why are there background and news reports and links that I have to dig through?

2. Are these news reports going on 'now'? Will they be long out of date when we start playing?

3. Are there any banned merits or flaws?

4. What books do I need?

5. What else do I need?

6. Is there any other way to earn extra points?

7. Will we be doing character creation stuff, or finalizing characters, at the first run?

Note: If you're not seeing the navigation bar in the correct place on this page, I have no idea why either. Just cope.

1. Why is there so much "in-game" stuff on the website? Do I have to read this? Why are there background and news reports and links that I have to dig through?

No, you don't have to read, or do, anything - but you may find it helps.

Let me explain my philosophy. Bear with me. When we create characters in a gaming world, they've been around for a while - they're not little kids usually. They are as familiar with what is commonplace in their reality as we are with our own. Things we might take for granted - brand names, local stores and gas stations, fast food restaurants, local diners, common househod names, famous celebrities, local politicians or polices, well known musicians, or even what's in your own neighborhood - these are all things your character would know about the world they live in. But, these are things that you, they player, don't really know unless you as the GM when they come up.
The gaming world we're playing in has a lot of similarities to our own - but it also has a lot of differences aside from the blatent supernatural and magickal ones. That is really the purpose of the News Reports and Background sections.
The background is there to tell you about your neighborhood and to provide some understanding of the environment. If I tell you a bus runs from University City to Society Hill, you will have some idea of what that means. That's only fair, I know exactly what it means, you should too.
The News Reports are there to be your newspaper, your television. Through them, and the information, links and advertisements they lead to, you can get a grasp of the state of the world and what is well-known and commonplace in your character's surroundings.
The purpose is not to give you lots more reading and work. The purpose is to answer questions and provide a backdrop for the game.
So enjoy it if you wish - ignore it if you don't care. But I will most likely reference these things in game play, so consider yourself fairly warned.

2. Are these news reports going on 'now'? Will they be long out of date when we start playing?

No. Any headlines on the site will be the headlines in the news on the in-game day we start playing. You're getting them ahead of time so you have time to get used to the world, and so you have background information to help design your characters. top of section

3. Are there any banned merits or flaws?

Not really, but if the rulebook suggests or recommends a warning to limit a merit or flaw - see me before you take it. As a rule of thumb, I would like to approve (or disapprove) any merits or flaws of 5 points or higher.

4. What books do I need?

I recommend a copy of the base rules for Werewolf or Mage, the appropriate player's guide, and your tribe or tradition book. If you can't get them or don't wish to put out the money (understandable), there are copies of all of these here.
Get in touch and arrange a time to come gen a character here if you wish.

5. What else do I need?

A handful of 10 sided dice. I recommend something to take notes in, but that is up to you. top of section

6. Is there any other way to earn extra points?

Yep, a few. They may be more later.
A) Game logger. The game is broken down into stories which are subdivided into chapters. A chapter can take from 1 to 4 sessions, usually. XP is awarded either at the end of a chapter, at the end of each story, or both. Anyone who logs a chapter will receive an extra point. This can pass of between players from chapter to chapter if you wish.
B) Props. If anyone wants to make cool props that are part of their character, or part of how their character interacts with the game, or even cool props for the gm :-), there may be XP awards for this as well. However, please talk to me before starting such a project. top of section

7) Will we be doing character creation stuff, or finalizing characters, at the first run?

I really hope not. I intend to have everyone set to play before game starts (which is why I'm bugging you for concepts now). This includes any personal intros, awakenings or rites of passage. I'll arrange one-on-one time with anyone who has something along these lines to do. While I prefer to do awakenings & rites in person, characer gen and general questions can be over email or IM. Please not over the phone though - I do prefer to have a trackable copy without having to scribble notes while I'm talking. top of section

GM notes 12-06-00:

  • Note - It is inadvisible to design "node-based" or "sanctum-based" research mages as there is likely to be some degree of travel and instability in this storyline
  • Note - Please see me before designing a lupus-style or Order of Hermes character
